Catch. Care. Release.
Catch and release starts before a fish leaves the water. Preparation and care matter. This general guide does not replace venue rules or an approved competition rulebook.
01. Start with the right rig
Choose barbless or micro-barbed hooks that cause less damage. Safety lead clips that release the lead if the line breaks prevent a fish from being left tethered to the rig.
02. Prepare first
Have a suitable landing net and a wetted fish care mat ready. Prepare for weighing and photos before lifting the fish out. Never put a fish on hard or dry ground.
03. Support carefully
Wet your hands and contact surfaces. Support the body and avoid touching the gills. Treat small wounds on the mouth or body with an antiseptic made for fish.
04. Keep it brief
Minimise time out of water. Keep the fish low over the mat for photos and, where possible, photograph very large fish in the water. Skip the photo if the fish is struggling.
05. Return safely
Support the fish in the water, give it time to recover and let it swim away under its own control. Ask venue staff for help if it is injured or struggling.
